Height: 5'9"
Weight: 227 lbs
Species: Black Rhinoceros
Physical Description: A male rhinoceros with a muscular build. He wears his hair short and commonly dresses in his army field uniform.
Biographical Data
Kennedy Alexander had signed up for the military as a way to get out of the small town where he grew up. As much as he loved life there opportunities were few if you didn't want to be a farmer or a shopkeeper. Entering the US Army gave him a chance to see the world and do something for the benefit of others.
When he joined he found military life suited him. He served in a number of various positions until he was assigned to the same base as Lieutenant Colonel Avery Wells. The two men became friends and often socialized when not on duty.
After the war broke out the two men promised to watch each other's backs if things got bad. As hostilities escalated, nations around the world launched their nuclear weapons. For some time after the collapse the Army attempted to restore order, allying themselves with the Air Force and Navy. When the alliance broke the Army found themselves on the losing end with an enemy on both sides. After their last base was destroyed and their forces apparently shattered, Kennedy and the surviving soldiers scattered in all directions.
Since then he has been traveling with Avery Wells trying to find a reason to keep going.
Personal Statement
"My name is Kennedy Alexander. I'm a Master Sergeant in the US Army. At least, what's left of it. I started life in a small town of two thousand people. Most of them were farmers or one of the various jobs in town. It was a great place to grow up but it could only take me so far. To get beyond that I had to join the army. I signed up as soon as I was old enough and out of high school. When I got there it felt like where I belonged. The uniform felt like it was poured onto me.
While I thought I'd do some good there I had not expected we would be called to war. By the time I'd reached the rank of Master Sergeant we heard all sorts of rumors about what was going on in the world stage. You know the kind. Everyone expected it was political posturing until someone actually launched a nuke. Several cities around the world got direct hits. We lost contact with the government.
After a few weeks it was clear we weren't getting help. Our commanding officers arranged us into a network and the army attempted to restore order. It worked for a little while since most people weren't ready to survive on their own. They welcomed us and we did what we could. After a few years things fell apart. I don't know what happened or who got a rod up their butt but all I know is we were fighting our brothers and sisters when the house was burning around us, so to speak. All I could do was stand with my fellow soldiers and hope calmer heads prevailed. They didn't.
When the Army's last base was broken Avery escaped with about twenty soldiers, including myself. We headed west for a while, though everyone seemed intent on killing us for one reason or another. I watched my friends die as we fought to find someplace safe and a reason to keep going. Soon there were only four of us. Avery, myself, Mills, and White. When we got to Albuquerque I figured maybe we'd finally catch a break.
PFFT. So much for that. We took refuge inside a college campus building and got ourselves surrounded by a larger hostile force. I thought we were done until someone actually answered Avery's distress call. I survived that day. Maybe I'm not finished yet."

Poor guys. As I said on the last post, having to live through not only the war but a total breakdown of everything you'd known and fought for had to be really rough. I'm glad to know that Avery has someone like this to back him up, and vice versa. And that they both eventually befriend Sierra. If I'm reading things right. But I wouldn't blame any of them for being pretty badly affected by things.
I have to admit that it's kind of nice to see soldiers treated sympathetically in a post apocalyptic setting. I'm not the sort to be super patriotic or anything, but it does make a nice change from the mindset that the military is automatically evil in such situations.

By the time Sierra meets Avery and Kennedy they've been beaten twice, chased halfway across the country, and are down to their last legs. Avery has a moment in his introductory episode where it really hits him and I think it's a touching scene. Kennedy is a bit of an archetype I seem to come across fairly often in my work as the strong right arm type. They're no less important for it, but they're the guys who you count on when the hero needs help. Being that I hadn't had one before, I made him a rhino because I'm all about uncommon species. ;) Kennedy shows it less, but so far I have only written about a third of their story, so we may see more effects as they go on.
I wanted to avoid the whole 'evil military' thing, and while the military is an adversary in 2 of the 4 stories, I tried to frame their motivations as they're still doing the job they set out to do but their mindset is different. Like they all want to restore order and protect the country, but there are many ways to do that and not all of them to the people's benefit. That said, Sierra befriends members of both the Army, Air Force, and Navy, proving it's not the organization but the people that fill it that control what it becomes.
