So finally at AFF, some good pictures of BOTH my bird costumes, complete and together, got taken. I had photos of one or the other, of both heads only, but none together, so yay. :) Thanks to everyone who sent/posted their photos! ^^ I do wonder if anyone got video, too; you kinda have to see them in motion for the full effect.
This one was taken by © Null (hope its okay with you I am putting this here, let me know if you have a FA account and I will link to you properly! :D). This was at the saturday night dance. My friend shawn is rocking the vulture (his first time, but he is a bat, so he played the part well), I am the phoenix (wishing I had enough inverters to light it all... project for next con). A bird of the desert and a bird of fire guarding the water table, haha!

I dont mind at all if people get inspired to make their own designs based on similar principles, but this isnt something I am really willing to turn into tutorial format; I spent a long time figuring them out, its like asking a chef to publlsh the secret recipe theyve been perfecting for years, you know? :) That said, I will answer questions on an individual basis, if anyone wants help with what they are making. But I am probably not going to make my exact process available to the public. I would rather people come up with their own designs, OR pay me if they want the exact same kind I make. ;D
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/792287/ has pictures of what lights up on the head, eyes, beak/cere, red outline. The wings are also outlined in red, but I only had one inverter (power source), because I lost one and another I had broke, so I had to choose wings OR head this con. Went with head, the wings need a stronger power source than I had to look good lit! Second night, though (when this pic was taken) I only had the eyes lit up, because I kept having problems with a wire connection, forgot my soldering iron, and just said screw it, next time! (The eyes are on their own separate AAA power source.)
As for the second question, nope... I actually havent seen any of the Harry Potter movies. o.O Thought I should read the books first, but have yet to actually get around to it!

Oh, gawd, I knew I recognised that head!
Sorry Murphy went after ya so hard, though. That said, I dunno that that lighting would have showed up very well in this picture anyway.
Also, hmm. *ponders* Being a huge bibliophile, I ought to agree with your strategy, but...I've always liked to watch the movie first, personally. That way, all the parts of the book that didn't make it in are a pleasant surprise, instead of a bitter disappointment.
