I dunno about that. The iron sights have such an amazing thing called a battle zero.
Short version: Set to battle sight, aim for belt buckle. You'll hit somewhere in the torso out to 400 meters without needing to know hold overs or other accuracy things.
I'm not sure if it works the same with red dots.

It works exactly the same with red dot sights, except you don't need to shift your focus from the target to the front sight. You focus on the target, put the dot where you want it, and press the trigger.
The red dot (or other reflex sights) offer further benefits, such as not being reliant on proper shooting position and eye placement: The reflex sight is far and away the king of fast, accurate, close-range shooting, especially from unconventional shooting positions.
And the old 400 meter battle zero, aiming at the belt buckle, worked great when armies marched in formation, wearing colorful uniforms with brightly shined buckles. Stopped working well around WWI, or any time you're shooting at an enemy that's moving rapidly, firing from prone or behind cover, or at any range closer than 400 meters. (Because if you have a head to shoot at, at 100 meters, with a rifle with a 400 meter zero, you're going to send your projectile zooming over their head.)
Magnified optics offer further benefits, such as greater target discrimination, while their etched glass reticles offer hold-overs roughly accurate for point targets to 600 meters or so, without fiddling with any levers on the sights.
Which isn't to say that irons don't have benefits or that iron sights cannot be used quickly and/or accurately, just that optics make it all much easier.

The 400 meter zero is still perfectly valid. You don't need to aim exactly at the by buckle. You just need to aim close enough to it. As for the round going over their head, the 5.45x39 has a flat enough trajectory that it isn't a problem.
Look up RussianOptics online. They have a section that explains the 400 meter zero better.

I'm familiar with the concept of the 400 meter battle zero. Shit went out of style around July of 1914. Only reason the Soviets did it was to keep from looking short-dicked by the M16/M16A1. Nobody uses a 400 meter zero in the field.
But don't take my word for it: Go out to the range and try to hit a head-sized target at 100-200 meters with your 400 meter zero.

I cannot think of a single person that I know or know of who runs an AK as a serious use firearm (not as a fun gun or for "foreign weapons" familiarization) who doesn't run some sort of optic on it - generally reflex sights: Eastern Europeans seem to favor EoTechs while Western Europeans and Americans seem to favor Aimpoints.

Well, even russian soldiers got to deal with cold, even for a shark woman like you, as some would like to get some warmth climate like in France. But Russian Winter is the most dangerous natural weapon of Russia, both Napoleon and Hitler where halted due to the torrid and powerful Russian Winter, so this does balance russian condition.
