Continuing my latest edition of "Throwback Thursday", here is one more 'photo-op' from the Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital in Coral Springs, Florida - taken (on April 9, 2017) by my brother Glenn with his smartphone...
Last year, when we went to this facility for the first time, the only other mammals we got to see (besides the raccoons) were several prairie dogs - https://www.furaffinity.net/view/20033620/ - but this year, said prairie dogs were unavailable for viewing (as they were in the hospital portion, for an annual check-up)...
However, we did get to see an alternate mammal in another section of the nature center: a Virginia opossum - who we'd found standing inside his exercise wheel! (Unlike the smaller versions of this wheel - made for hamsters and guinea pigs - this one was built from scratch, using a pair of bicycle tires.) At one point, we even got to see the opossum run (or, at least, walk) in said wheel. We were also amazed at how big his mouth was, whenever he yawned (every few minutes).
Since opossums are nocturnal animals, this one is usually more active at nighttime. Hence, his being tired during the day. But still, it was so cool to see this critter in his own enclosure. (It should also be noted that, like the raccoons in my previous posts, this opossum was born with a health defect [in this case, blindness], and subsequently cannot be released into the wild.)
Next "Throwback Thursday", I'll have more 'photo-ops' of additional animals from the Sawgrass Nature Center (this time, all sorts of birds). Meanwhile, these other pix (as well as the ones posted earlier this year) will eventually be transferred to my 'Scraps' section, as of July, 2017.
