and well, someone actually told me before, that hitakana is the simplified version for a few kanji, using as the phonetic symbol. then katakana is a further simplified version of hitakana, usually for spelling foreign language (like English...) in Japanese. So I can't really say that they are similar... XP maybe they are, in a long long time ago... but then the whole system evolved ... XP
