Name: Charizard
Classification: Flame
Type: Fire
Number: 006
Evolution: Charmander – Charmeleon (level 16) – Charizard (level 36)
Length: 1.70 meters from the head to the base of the tail; tail ca. 1.5 meters
Wingspan: 10 meters
Weight: 90 kilos
Habitat: near active volcanoes
Description: Charizard live solitary lives near active volcanoes all over the world, often hunting in nearby fields or mountains. They are thoroughly disinterested in any opponent that is considerably weaker than them, both in the wild and in captivity, sometimes leading to awkward scenes in pokémon battles. They are much in favour with trainers for their strength, but few trainers manage to actually use them in battle. Charizard do not take well to orders and will constantly challenge the dominance of the trainer. When on the ground, they walk around on all fours, or raise themselves on their hind legs to intimidate others. They only meet for fighting or mating. Females are usually slightly larger than males. They can fly over 1,5 kilometers high. Because of their wingspan, they can soar for hours without flapping their wings. They can even sleep while flying. It has excellent eyesight and can spot prey like Ponyta from great distances. When it spots its prey, it plummets from the sky and either crushes the prey beneath it, or picks it up with its arms and kills it in flight. It often eats while flying. The bits they drop serve as an important food source for the Charmander living on the volcanoes where Charizard lay their eggs. They make rough nests by pushing boulders into a circle. The Charizard abandon the nest immediately after laying the eggs and the young Charmander are left to fend for themselves.
Charizard have always had a great appeal for humans. Their raw strength and majestic flight (although they look rather clumsy on land) fire the imagination. Although they are few in number – due to the fierce competition between Charizard for their giant territories – representations of these mighty dragons can be found in art of all ages all over the world. Many artists from ancient times had never seen a Charizard themselves, leading to paintings of Charizards with multiple heads or absurd wingspans. In some cultures, Charizard were believed to live inside volcanoes and that it were these pokémon that caused eruptions. Charizard deities can be found in some primitive cultures.
Wingspan is based on the pterosaur Quatzalcoatlus which, according to some studies, had a wingspan of up to 12 metres and is estimated to weigh anywhere from 100 to 250 kilograms.
