I've never been to one of the larger cons before. I'm used to the photographer basically letting you strike one or two poses then moving on, so I just did my normal few poses. I wasn't expecting to be able to do a decent handful of pictures, and didn't know until my friends after me got their turns that the photographer was also very good at suggesting poses and also asking the subjects to express certain things and seeing where they went from there.
Heh. That's the biggest problem / hesitation I have when taking photos. I'm horrible at coming up with ideas for the fursuiter to pose in.
I think my problem is that I want the fursuiter to take a pose that captures their personality, and not simply something I think might look good. I like to think of the fursuiters as characters, and wouldn't want to have them strike a pose that might be out of character for them. :)
There's also the fact that I always shudder when I see a photographer posing a fursuiter; moving their head and arms and such; and then telling them not to move, while they then step back and prepare to take the photo. All I can think about is the poor fursuiter, standing there is some pose for however long it takes, for a photo that at the end of the day, they might not be happy with how it turned out. :)

I recall Maglot once telling me how he would stand in fursuit, in front of a mirror and strike various poses to see how he looked. This way, when at a con and in front of a camera, he knew what poses he thought worked best for him, and would make for better pictures.
As a photographer, I always wish more fursuiters did that, to make my life much easier at getting a shot the fursuiter would enjoy. *laughs*

I redid one of the bathrooms when I moved into my house. I replaced the large mirror that was behind the sink, but kept it to put in a spare room, which I was going to use as an exercise room, storage, office, etc, and also have the mirror to play with poses. Well, the storage aspect seems to have taken over that room :P I do need to clean it up, and still plan on getting the mirror where I can put it to use.
In general I definitely agree that it is nice to let suiters just goof around, be themselves, not take a lot of time blocking hallways for poses, etc, but for the photoshoot setups where they have the backdrop and convention photographer then it can be nice at times to have them provide some poses, guidance, etc. Each format has its place, and can be a bit of a collaborative effort.
Looks like Maglot strikes a good pose

*laughs* Sounds like you need to have a party, where you get your guests to help clean that room.
And yeah, I completely understand about suggestions for poses. It can't be easy to know what you're looking like while wearing a fursuit, so every bit of help must be nice. I'm simply horrible at offering such help. *laughs*
The biggest thing I try to tell people, is not to just stand there all stiff, with their hands down at their sides. But if they want to look cute, intimidating, shy, angry, happy, etc... I really have no idea. :)
