*EDIT 4/17/17* I've recently made some slight modifications to the image, specifically on the shadows and lighting. I made the fire more luminescent as well as added more ambient light to the surroundings since in the previous version the fire looked too dim and the lighting wasn't right. In addition, I added more shadows were needed, especially on the small rocks around the nest.
*EDIT 5/17/2017* I have just finished editing my character's wing anatomy. Nothing major, just a small change by adding the front membrane on the wings on Aurora.

Now that I have created a small quick reference of the Aurorian dragon and have outlined the setting of where this takes place, I can now start from the beginning.

This is Aurora Lumina, hatched on the longest night of the year, the Winter Solstice, the year, D.A. 0 (1980 B.C.)

As mentioned before, Aurora had undergone a transformation in which she became the first Aurorian Dragon, in which she has glowing marks on throughout her body. This scene takes place 18 years before her first transformation when she was once an Aura Dragon. On the upper right is Aurora’s mother, Luminesce, and on the upper left is Aurora’s father, Atmos.

This is my first attempt at drawing backgrounds where Aurora hatches from her egg in a nest with her parents, who are hiding in cave up in the northern lands. This was created using the Procreate App on my iPad Pro.



Short Background Story:

Within the society of the Aura Dragons, the culture and way of life in their tribes was primitive. They followed by strict rules and laws that mainly served to benefit the powerful, mainly tribal leaders, guardians, and warriors. Their culture was based on a patriarchal system where males had dominant roles. Females had no power or no freedom for themselves. Their lives were determined by their fathers as they would choose the mates for their daughters. There was a highly strict law that all mating partners must only be within the tribes of their scale color so as to preserve the bloodline of each tribe. Mating with a dragon of a different color was punishable by either exile or death for either mate. Battles occur occasionally between different tribes for power and control over one another. Any talks for peace and unification of the tribes is considered worthless and a treason to the loyalty of a tribe. Each tribe is headed by a male ruler, known as the Alpha of the tribe. They have ultimate political and tyrannical power over all dragons within their tribe. There were 4 main tribes in the land, the Green Auras of the Central Lands, the Blue Auras of the Northern lands, the Red Auras of the South, and the Purple Auras of the Tropics.

Atmos, a male Blue Aura Dragon was born in the Northern Lands in 22 B.A. His parents were of different colors, a Blue Aura Dragon Mother and a Green Aura Dragon Father. His parents were against the tribal system and culture and went with their lives together as they please. They were killed by their tribes when he was only 7 years old, leaving him to defend for himself from the tribes for being a Half-Blood Dragon.

Luminesce, a female Green Aura Dragon born in the Western Plains in 20 B.A. Her parents were strict followers of their tribal culture. Luminesce, on the other hand, hated the tribal culture. She had secretly met Atmos and befriended him when she was 16. The two had continued to meet from time to time and eventually the two developed feeling for one another. However, Luminesce’s parents had other plans. When her parents had chosen a mate for her at 18, she expressed dissent, but her parents ruthlessly shut her down to accept her chosen mate. Ultimately, she escapes to be with Atmos, wanting nothing to do with her tribe or her parents. When her parents found out about her escape, the tribe conducted a search and capture on her, but she has evaded them at every turn.

The two remained in hiding up in the northern lands where few to no Aura Dragons lived. They roamed from one location to another to evade any Auras that spotted them. 2 years after Luminesce had escaped her tribe to be with Atmos, they became mates and in 4 months had their first egg. They hid in a secluded region where they found a cave and made their nest. After 5 months, the egg hatched, Aurora Lumina was born.
