The good thing about being able to eat tar is that getting "caught" in it is more of a feast than a problem. It's a bit like tossing a slime mold into a bowl full of nutrients...
What would make a rescue difficult is that it's hard to go into both tar eater mode and maintain enough physical form to extricate someone. That and not giving a rescuee a heart attack because an eldritch horror jumped into the tar pit... Figuring out a form that wouldn't cause too much fright is the tricky part.
