(apologies for the dup in my journal, but it dawned on me this really was more of an artistic endeavor than textual blogging)
Reclining in the passenger seat of an old sedan you travel for hours through sun-drenched countryside. Warm winds blow through the open windows, rippling your clothes and tossing your hair. It doesn't faze you. Conversations are over, you're alone in your pocket of the car dreamily watching the endless landscape pass by.
This moment is what I've attempted to capture aurally. That, along with the smell of fresh cut grass on a summer breeze wafting in your bedroom window.
Or, perhaps, riding your bike at dusk through a quiet neighborhood. The air is thick with the aroma of backyard barbecues; smoke lazily rising into the lush, green canopy. Lingering rays of sunlight cascade through gaps in the treetops.
*sigh*
Here it is: A Summer Album. A deftly crafted compilation of songs that evoke the sensation of these moments and memories. Best listened to on long, quiet road trips or lazy Sunday afternoons.

It makes your heart ache, doesn't it? Phew....at least, I am glad I'm not the only one that gets struck by these longings :) Where did you grow up?
Oh, and please let me know if the music does anything for you. I'm kind of curious if they'll have the same effect on others or if it's more of s singular, personal connection...

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get at the music, the archive won't download properly for some reason.
It keeps getting up to around 90+% then just errors. But I'll keep trying! *clenches fist*
Where'd I grow up?
Let's see... I first lived in New Jersey, then I moved to Florida for a while. That was when I was barely old enough to speak. Though I can remember it pretty good.
I did most of my growing up in Oklahoma, or was it St. Louis? Unfortunately, I'm not that good at the geography of the USA. I'm not sure if those two places are in one place or not.
Hmmm... I fI had to name a land mark or two though...
I lived on the side of the river The Arch was on. And Union Station too I think. It was so long ago that I have a hard time remembering.
Though... Yes, I admit, it makes my heart ache ever so much. I long to go back to the places... Some kind of strange bond. It's hard to describe, though I'm sure you know pretty darn well what I mean.

What? It's still giving you problems? Ok, I'm uploading it to a new hosting site to see if that's what's giving you problems. Sorry about that :(
holy shit dude no way! I grew up in New Jersey, too! Granted, I was actually there when I was old enough to speak, but I did move away before really maturing and so it's always held these (over-idealized) Calvin & Hobbes-esque memories for me. I mean, check out my old house and friends there: http://picasaweb.google.com/nudall/Misc# Come on! Tell me that's not the perfect childhood location ;)
But you, you stuck around the east and central parts of America. That still gets seasons! I'll bet you've had a snowy Christmas or two, eh?

Not just one or two, plenty of snowy Christmasses.
And dude! Calvin and Hobbes! One of the few comics to make me feel this way and that about it @_@
As for New Jersey, I lived near the bay, near the boardwalk.
Near Ashbury Park.
I remember going crabbing with my folks... Low setting sun, salty but cool sea breeze, mosquitos biting your legs xD
That was so long ago, and so fun! Gah, I miss that. I really, truly do.
Oh~! If I were to name aland-mark, it would have to be the Anchor Inn. It's a bar that was situated near where I lived.
And dude, lovely pictures. That looks alot like the place I lived at.
And also, Christmas may be one of my more favorite holidays, but my crowning-holiday-of-awesome will always have to be Halloween. GAWD. I have soooooo much good memories with Halloween... *sigh* DEAR LORD Halloween... @_@
But then again, I guess it's my fave holiday because I love autumn/fall. The falling leaves, like a rain of fire!
It's also one of the reasons why my favorite color is orange :P
Gah... I could just sit here talking about it for hours... Such nice fond memories... I'm sort of glad I'm leaving for the states in a few years to finish my studies, sort of.

I swear there's something in us - something that makes certain folks more attached to their childhood memories. Like ridiculously nostalgic...sometimes so much it hurts. But in a good, longing kind of way. At times I wonder if I'm TOO focused on the past and wonder what I could accomplish if I focused this energy on my future. Other times I think it's a valuable emotional characteristic, enabling us to create poignant art that connects people in ways they've forgotten or no longer dwell on.
Can't say I've ever gone crabbing or know of the Anchor Inn, but those kind of family outdoor activities always seem to sear the deepest in our memories. Walking on the beaches at low tide during the sunset was always a classic activity for us.
You're sooooo right about Halloween and fall time! The noise of all those hard leaves under your feet while walking on the sidewalk, the cool briskness of the air full with the smoky aroma of fireplaces. Being taken to pumpkin patches and apple orchards...
*sigh*
This has been so fun man, thanks for sharing in this with me :)

Hell no it's not LA!
That's the East Coast. Where you get real seasons and life is full and beauty and well-being ;)
You know, as much as I dog on LA I should probably hone my criticism down to Los Angeles County. Because the countryside DOES have potential for being quiet and beautiful in that sun-soaked Italian country-side way.

Heh, I'm a music junkie who'll do just about anything for some killer tracks. ;)
I actually liked all of the tracks. My only complaint about the compilation are the use of Aphex Twin's "Film" and Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel". I totally get the feeling that they invoke, for both summer and being in transit, yet I don't think they go particularly well with the other songs. "Film" is a little too uptempo and electronic sounding while the rest of the album is more relaxed with a classic band-with-guitars-and-drums sound. "Spiegel im Spiegel", on the other hand, fits well for the instrumental side of things but it just seems a tad too slow and quiet. Maybe it could work if it were shoved toward the end but I really like the album ending with "Passenger Seat". Nonetheless, they are two very good tracks for the feelings you are trying to invoke.
What's the title for Múm's second track (#13)?

Some excellent observations! THANK YOU!
Dwelling on this so long I've kind of lost the perspective that you and others have so I do appreciate your insight.
Hmm...I knew it was ballsy throwing in an Aphex Twin track on such a mellow comp, but I thought I could get away with it by buddying it up next to the múm track which has a similarly glitchy sound. Either way, I would have taken your comment and really looked at replacing it had you mentioned this beforehand :)
Ok, my excuse for Spiegel im Spiegel is that it's length, slowness, and quietness is an intentional break from the rest of the album as though to evoke the feel of a drowsy nap at the hottest part of the day. Hence it's placement in the middle. Still...every recording you can find of that song is strangely low volume.
The 13th track on the compilation is from the múm album Blái Hnötturinn which was a soundtrack they did for a children's play of an Icelandic fairy tale. All the tracks are untitled, but it's the 15th one on that album.

I suppose your thought process behind Spiegel im Spiegel makes sense. I'll take that into account the next time I listen to the album and see if it makes a difference.

So you're an east-coast lover eh? Man I don't know where to begin to explain how much I despise where I live. It's a sprawling land of dirt, sand, dry shrubs and casinos. There are a few neighborhoods that look like your photo but they are for the mega-rich folk. You bet I love taking detours through them, they are a little piece of the east coast I remember as a child. The rest get "little boxes made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same."
LA is at least a bit more interesting with their varying eclectic cultures, here in Vegas we have a hardcore kiddie scene and then your typical mainstream pop tripe.
I want to live somewhere quiet, near or in the woods. That's where a badger needs to be, in the Woods!!
Anyways, I'll be sure to take a listen to your compilation.

Well, be careful when you listen because it's just going to drive you more crazy about where you live now :P Particularly the last track...
I've been in Vegas several times and you're absolutely right. There is NOTHING appealing about desert towns...unless they're isolated, sleepy trailer parks full of interesting characters ;) Compared to your situation, *I* have it good! Which is really, really sad :(
Well, the fact we know each other are furries means there's not many worse secrets, so we could pretty much be roommates. Rent a historic house in a quaint New England town that's an hour outside of NYC or Boston. Go innertubing down slow rivers on hot summer days while surrounded by lush walls of green trees...
Though, I gotta say living near the woods in a quiet area can also be pretty frightening :o I need the assurance of relatively close neighbors! Like 1-2 acre lots seem perfect.

Well okay, maybe not in the woods, but there's nothing like having a little bit of forestry to take a hike through.
Vegas is really more of a place to retire when you are aged and you have nothing else to do than gamble your life savings away. Growing up here? Bleh.
But that sounds like a pretty awesome idea. Unfortunately, I attend UNLV (University of Never Leaving Vegas), or in other words, I'm financially unable to move anywhere, or travel, or do anything really!! Maybe in the future. You seem like a cool person.

I'm gonna put one together right now man. Nothing beats boredom than thinking up songs :D Also, it's really nice to hear about your childhood being like calvin and hobbes. I only had the comics to read everyday, it totally sucked for me growing up, but everyday I'd read those comics and wish I was him. That's the biggest reason I got into watercolors in the first place
