"A sound mind in a sound body." You may not know this, but wizard and wisdom share the same root word, and a wise warrior trains their body and mind alongside each other. Any mage can swing a staff with enough force to crack bones, and very few would pass up the chance to add, oh, say, a Sword of Flame or a Ring of Invisibility to one's arsenal. Hey, ya never know when it'll come in handy. That, or mages just like shiny things, that might explain it too.
