Most likely circumstance? He got a little too cocky on the battlefield or relied a bit too much on a new experimental bit of magic and the 'heroes' got a lucky shot in to lay him low. Then the Lepusculi just uncorked one of his backup vital salt concoctions, added the requisite alchemical formula and zapped it with some of their own azoth to trigger the process.
