Remember when we fought in conventional wars, with uniformed soldiers and objectives to blitz? The Republican Guard was by no means the most organized or efficient military, what with getting trapped on highways and carpet bombed, but I have a respect for soldiers who are willing to stand and die even against the most insurmountable and unwinnable battles. So for this reason, I figure I could at least sketch something up on a sunday morning.
I really didn't want to spend a whole hell of a lot of time on this pic, so I decided just to leave it as is, but i've been wanting to do a republican guard picture for awhile. I will give them their due sometime in the distant future when i've got another few ideas down on paper properly, but this was just a warmup to get my drawing hands back in the game.

Funny enough I'm reading a book on the Iran-Iraq war right now. Fascinating seeing two incompetent armies butt heads for 8 years. Really gives perspective on why the war in Syria has gone on for so long, as the balance of military incompetence on both sides is similar to that of the Iran-Iraq War. Feel bad for the grunts on both sides who were thrown into meat grinders they were never going to win.
The Iran Iraq war still continues to be one of my favorite modern wars of all time specifically for alot of the reasons youve already stated. It serves as a beautiful control element of what a standard bullshit proxy war looks like, where thousands die and nobody gains anything.
