They're minor Lovecraft "Eldritch Abominations" whose presence tends to drive humans insane. Most of the cosmic horrors from Lovecraft (and a lot of fiction since) drove the people who perceived them insane.
It was sort of a dark joke on my part; the bird looks like a phoenix and has the effect of a Lovecraft horror, driving the people that hear it mad.
