Hey folks, Bootz here.
This is what happens when boredom and artists block hit me, I binge watch the fuck out of shows on Netflix.
So yeah, I'm a bit late to the party on this but this show got a bit of flack even before it was released. Upon actually getting a chance to watch it myself I formulated my own reasons for why it could've been better, starting with the pettiest one the main lead. Seriously when did Danny ever have a Jew fro? That bothered me through out the whole god damned show, fucker didn't even bother to shave either like in one of those kung-fu films from the 70's where you have the 'smooth' white dude with the fro and beard kick everyone's ass circa Dolemite....which is hilarious saying that out loud considering when Iron Fist was first made but I digress.
With that bit out of the way I actually did enjoy the show...however near the end it started getting a bit dumb for one or two reasons, one of which is everyone being...slightly more interesting than Danny. Now maybe it's just cause I've read a lot of Power -Man and Iron Fist but Danny has a LOT more personality than the show allowed him to portray. In fact there were one or two episodes that damn near called it out basically talking about how he "ran away with the iron fist" which was all he had going for him but didn't allow Iron Fist HIMSELF to really explore. I swear the song "Don't Loose Your Way" played in my head each time there was a character that called him out on it.
Now before going on any further I might as well address the meat of why people said this show was gonna suck, the main lead. Personally he did alright with what he was given...and ultimately that's what it boils down to with this show. Don't get me wrong I'm not gonna flat out say that white washing isn't a thing, it still is and it's fucked up. But watching this show and watching what they did with Danny, no matter what lead they had they still would've fucked over the character.
-SPOILERS-
See in the beginning they start off with him coming back to modern society and how everything changed, one of those things being the fact that everyone thinks he's dead. From there you'd think it'd go through the whole "he has to prove he's alive and it's really him" deal right, and yeah he does...right after getting drugged and sent to a fucking mental hospital where they flat out forge a new name for him because the person who knows it's Danny doesn't want him interfering with his life. Yeah he gets people to know it's him eventually but good lord is it a stretch of faith on how but I'll get to that. But after getting out and free now Danny has to try and fit in but while doing that he has to get rid of enemies that his father's old friend made while maintaining his own agenda all while being manipulated by said father's old friend. Then once that little tid bit is tied up, as quickly as possible, he has to fight other people in order to prove that he is the true Iron Fist proving that he is the ultimate weapon all while being called out by every enemy about how he basically ran the fuck away for his own selfish reasons. Now see the fucked up thing is they're actually kinda right but what's bad is that the villains call him out on this knowing him better than he knows himself...they don't leave that development for Danny to explore, they drag it out in exposition and fights. And if that wasn't bad enough near the end we have his childhood friend pop in literally out of nowhere, give us exposition on why he's there, try and kill the remainder of "The Hand" and when Danny doesn't want him to hurt his love interest (because of course he has one, and an Asian one to boot) the childhood friend gets pissy saying he isn't worthy to wield the Iron Fist because he should've been the one to wield it. And I didn't even get into the other bullshit that was the people who now own Danny's father's company.
Yeah to make that story short the family that took over is company is all fucked up, the father basically manipulates Danny up till the end cause he's too stupid to realize it until the old lady of "The Hand" has to tell him "Hey dumb ass that guy you like so much...yeah he killed your father. Just thought you should know." The son was a flat out basket case who wanted nothing but daddy's approval and even as he was about to die he flat out got called a shit by his own father, and here I thought Tidus had daddy issues. Last but not least the daughter who started off pretty ok in the beginning actually ends up being a complete bitch by the end of it believing that Danny was the one who causes all of this after being told by Danny's childhood friend from their training, a dude she doesn't know and who is now working for the hand even though he wanted to destroy them...see what I mean?
They would've fucked the character over no matter WHAT actor was playing him, so frankly the guy who was originally supposed to be the lead was better off playing the drunken master, that and he had better choreography than him so yeah. And if you think it's just Danny that got screwed over you'd be wrong, if you watched the show the people who gave Danny his powers got turned into some apathetic assholes. Like I don't know if that's how they were originally but in the show he saves a girl basically saying he surrenders to save her life and they MOCK him for it. Like...really? I mean I know they're supposed to destroy the hand but damn...didn't think collateral damage wasn't an issue.
-SPOILERS END HERE-
Regardless of all that I did enjoy it and frankly I'm all for a season two, provided they actually focus on the character we wanna see. You know, the title character, Iron Fist.
That said that's my opinion, have any other thoughts leave 'em in the comments.
