Happy B-day there
dragomike! I'm here to bring you good wishes, fun times, and I even baked you a cake! :D

(He doesn't seem all that thrilled. I wonder why? :D)

I had a ball with this one. ^^ Tried a few new things with both drawing and cleaning up the picture after scanning it. I'd say the lines look a hell of a lot cleaner now!
Happy B-day you big green lug. Enjoy your cake. ;)

The new technique did seem to give some nice linework. And the two of you look so nice and shiny too.
But, from Drago's expression, perhaps you should return to the kitchen for a second batch (or even a 3rd or 4th if those happen to "vanish" the way the first did *giggles*).

Give this a try. Scan it at 1200 DPI, then shrink it down to 25% using bilinear filters. (Assuming you can, on whatever program you use.) From there clean up the picture however you need to, increase the color depth to 16 million, and color away. Then reduce the image again in size with the same filters to your desired end size for the picture, and finish it up. Namely do your shading, lighting, and any other tidbits you want to toss in for effect.
That's pretty much what I do. ^^
