That is all true. - Though... from the other point of view, why would that be a bad thing? And Yes I know the ansver but lets think it little bit more.
Lets say someone takes your art and uses it. - Okay thats is not so nice thing. But hey it is free adverticing and that someone bothers to do so is a darn good sign!
It might look that it is away from you... and that is true on small and direct scale. But on large and indirect its quite opposite. As I said.. it is very good free advertising. And who ever is trying to use your art cannot reproduce it exatly same as you can because you're the source, creator. That unlucky dude who tries to get fame or money with someones elses art is going to just harm his / hers own career in a long run and to be busted and blamed of being art thief, - criminal and so on. And that is right kind fate for such persons. They need to learn.
So Is it okay to allow someone using your art for such?... urm.. no but my point here is, you do not have to worry about it. Your art is unique and only you can reproduce more like it. Others can only copy existing pieces you have created, and all that will in long run lead much more of those who are truly interested of your art to you. And that is what you want! Dont you???
To talk about sneaky watermarking.. I have several times come across artworks that are just beautiful and admirable. But then someone who looks at it bit more sharpy tells me that it was made by lets say artist X... and Im like... how did they know. And they point me on that small... very tiny watermark that is basically part of picture. - Artist had done two versions.. another with that sneaky watermark and other without. One with.. was publicly visible.. and that watermark is very hard to remove cause its on the center and more or less almost as a part of artwork cause it fills the missing color from the spot with text of that same color.
Watermarks are not about copying or tracing art, because you cannot protect your work from that with watermarks. Those are issues I do not care much about. I am fine with people sharing my work as long credit is present and not used for profit, sadly not a lot of people do that.
And WITHOUT a visible watermark it won't be advertising anymore because my name is not appearing.( Keep in mind I make a living from my work.) And my art would be vulnerable to people who want to steal art for profit with printing merchanidice. I have seen enough advertisements of t-shirts and other merch pass by on facebook which has stolen artwork on it.
Think it this way, without watermark the artwork and artist will become a nobody. The world and internet is large and endless and as a small artist like me, have no power or control when I post my work online.
And I believe USA has a law that says that if your work has no name present/creator is unknown, then people can do whatever they want with it without copyright charges.
Also keep in mind it is not easy to FIND art theft on the internet or in real life. Someone out there could make hundreds from my artwork at the moment or until I find out. And when I find out, I can't do anything because I cannot afford a lawyer. So a watermark would be my way of defending my work and claiming ownership of it (remember uploads will have time stamps on it.) It more of a proof to say it is MY artwork :)
And if you wonder why I make it so big and slap it on top of my work: photoshop people exist. It is much easier to photoshop away a watermark that is in a corner or is very small on the piece. And if people really want to go for it, they can still photoshop away my big watermark. But it takes much more effort. So yeah, I rather have tried protecting my work than not at all. And if people really care about my work and want to promote me, they would not be bothered by the watermarks. I try my best to make it not too obnoxious.
