Such a very homemade look to this one. Probably carved by a family member from the flattest stone they could find. In a way it really stands out, and it looks like it's stood the test of time extremely well. The letters are deeply incised and barring vandalism or some major natural disaster, it should be legible for thousands of years.

We should all be so lucky to have our name preserved that well, even if the stone is a little crude.

That's part of the reason I like fieldstones.

In the Lancaster yard most of the oldest stones are like this one. On some the carver even continued the inscription on the footstone when he ran out of space on the headstone.
