Hello,
This is a finished painting commissioned for my good friend
ligaa who was interested in depicting his fursona in a S.T.A.L.K.E.R – Shadows of Chernobyl setting.
I've always been a fan of the post apocalyptic look, so imagine my surprise to get a commission dealing in just that sort of subject.
To do some research on the picture, I watched the original STALKER movie, filmed by the famed Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky and read the book Roadside Picnic, written by the Strugatsky Brothers. The book was quite interesting and gave me a lot of ideas about how the setting would look and the sense of mystery surrounding the zone.
In this image, Ligaa is relaxing after searching the Zone for alien artifacts and reflects on the serenity of the zone. Silence permeates the air, save for the occasional wisp of wind. All that stands before him are the ruins of a great civilization and the endless expanses of nature, slowly reclaiming what used to be an industrial city. The zone is an unforgiving place, littered with invisible anomalies which warp space and time. Wildlife is absent, even birds do not venture to this place. But in this zone lie priceless alien artifacts, the presence of which attracts numerous mercenaries to retrieve them. These mercenaries, or Stalkers as they call themselves face the uncertainty of the zone, but have learned that a slow, deliberate pace, a calm disposition and the longest path lead them to their success. They feel an attraction to the zone, and seem at peace with their fate. I wanted to convey a sense of calm with the character to show this.
I hope you like the image : )
Comments and critique are also well appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Heh, the game has *nothing* in common with the book (or the movie, which isn't terribly close to it, either) but the name, but I guess you already know that ;)
The picture is pretty good, though. I am a somewhat sucker for post-apocalyptic stuff, too...
The only slight flaw is, the inscription should be "Запретная зона", not "Запретных зона", but you not being Russian aren't too likely to be able to tell the difference. (I am)

Geeze! I really like how you blended the photographic background with the art in the foreground. I was reminded of that show on the Discovery Channel called, "Life without People" which explained what might happen to our world if all the humans suddenlt dissapeared. I just wondered of the apartment building in the background is on the verge of collapse due to lack of maintenance, or if it had suffered some sort of damage, like a fire. If anything, I you image got me to thinking of the place in my stories where an expierimental matter conversion plant went "Scramble" and vaporized a thousand foot in diameter, hemispherical crater into the earth. The remnants of the power plant have been left in place as a memorial to the technicians and workers how stayed at their posts in order to contain the reaction.
Thanks for the kind comments, steamfox.
The project was probably one of my best ones to date and I really hope to take on another painting like this one in the future. The painting incorporates elements from Pripyat, Ukraine, the location where the video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R takes place. There was also some inspiration from the novel, Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers, which chronicles the effects of an unseen alien visitation upon a city, which is now a ghost town.
I hope to get more commissions like this one in the future since they're quite a lot of fun to do, albeit time consuming.

Knowing that today is the 25th anniversary I was looking how artists would handle the topic Chernobyl here on FA. While I do admire your artistic skills I find it hard to swallow to see the picture itself. Yes, nature reclaims the place. But the trees are sick, seldomly would they reach their natural size. The wind carries the dust with the invisible radioactivity. That is the only deadly enemy here, enemy to all that is alive. It's an enemy that renderes your gun useless.
Yes, you did well on capturing what you had in mind.
But I still find it hard to swallow that many furries commission artists to show their character on the background of Chernobyl with a gun in their hand. Isn't the place already deadly enough?

Hi and thanks for the feedback.
Perhaps some context is in order. Do you play video games much? There is a first person shooter called STALKER, Shadow of Chernobyl, which is based on both the Chernobyl disaster and the science fiction novel Roadside Picnic. It is a story by the Strugatsky Brothers, a group of famous Russian Science Fiction authors and is one of their seminal works. I would highly recommend it as a read. The story foretold a disaster creating an exclusion zone which was cordoned off as a 'nature preserve'. However, this area has a dark secret which becomes deadly apparent to the protagonist at the end of the story. Its fantastic Russian science fiction writing at its best.
In the STALKER game, you play as a treasure hunter/ mercenary who visits the exclusion one to recover artifacts. These mercenaries oftentimes carry Geiger counters to avoid radiation pockets and explore old ruins at their own personal risk to recover items of unfathomable wealth. They carry rifles to deal with rival treasure hunters along with the mutated creatures that roam the ruins looking for a quick meal. The game is a highly immersive experience that pulls you in and keeps you in suspense. Its really a must-play experience. However, it is not a truly 'realistic' simulation. If it was, the game would be impossible to complete. So, it is a work of the imagination. The same goes with furries as well. : )
As many folks are fans of the game, naturally they want their characters drawn in that universe so I am obliged to help them realize their vision.
Hope that clears things up a bit!
