“Princess, one of the patrols found this in the garden. He said it rolled down the mountain,” explained a royal guard Pegasus as he cradled a large egg in his arms. “What should we do with it?”
Intrigued by the find, Celestia examined the egg. Despite the guard’s story, it didn’t have so much as a scratch from its rough journey. The design on the egg was unfamiliar, but the large size meant that…
“Hmm. This is a dragon egg. Has anyone come looking for it?” she asked, but the guard shook his head. “Well, please let me know if somebody does. Until then, could you bring this to the nursery?” She carefully gave the egg back to the guard, who nodded and slowly flew away down the hall.
Several days passed, but nobody appeared to ask about the egg. It slowly became clear that whoever lost it was not coming back, so Celestia had it sent to her School for Gifted Unicorns for safekeeping.
The way the school handled dragon eggs was rather unique. Eggs were typically obtained either as donations from dragon parents who weren’t ready for a child, or recovered from long-abandoned nests as orphans. Without the assistance of an adult dragon’s magic, it was practically impossible for dragon eggs to hatch on their own. The shells were extremely resilient – most forms of magic could not do as much as scratch the surface. For that reason, the eggs were often used for the school’s entrance exams where applicants would be asked to hatch them. The true nature of the test was to show how applicants responded to failure, but on occasion the eggs would actually be successfully hatched. This has only happened a few times, however – not counting Spike, only 12 times in the school’s long history.
In the case where a baby dragon was hatched, there was often not a home immediately available to adopt them. Celestia never had children of her own, so whenever this happened she would take the opportunity to care for the baby dragon until a home could be found, or the dragon grew enough to be independent. She had a particular fondness for dragons, as their longevity meant they could stay with her for a long time without seeming to age very much – a pseudo-immortality that mirrored her own. While goodbyes still happened, they were far less frequent and usually not permanent.
A few weeks after the mysterious egg arrived at the school, a prodigy of a unicorn managed to successfully hatch it. To everyone’s surprise, however, the dragon’s appearance was unlike anything the scholars had seen before. Her wings were feathered like those of a bird, and feathers as well as scales covered her body. On her head were three horns: two that looked like the antlers of a deer and one that, most surprisingly, closely resembled a unicorn’s horn. Did that mean she could use unicorn magic?
Unable to find information on this species in the archives, Celestia contacted Dragon Lord Ember, who said that the baby was a feather dragon – a rare species that excels in intelligence and magic, vastly different from Ember’s often-brutish subjects.
At hearing this, Celestia was reminded of a certain pupil who used to send her letters and had outstanding magical abilities. In a way, this little dragon was similar to that pony. Perhaps as a way to relive that experience, Celestia decides to teach this dragon how to use unicorn magic – but first, the baby’s young magic would need to be honed and developed. To that end, Celestia routinely gave her a special kind of milk, magically-enriched to form a reservoir of magic for later use.
After some thought, Celestia named the baby Feynnax, or “bane of cruelty”, in hopes that she might master friendship like her predecessor. Feynnax’s unique mix of student and daughter to Celestia gives the princess high hopes for the little dragon’s future.
