I was interviewd *again* in connection with the Worldcon, this time for a college newspaper in Ottawa, called The Link. The journalist asked if I could provide an illustration, and I sort of dragged me heels. I was busy, and didn't care much for the idea he suggested. (A city scene in Montreal, where the con will be held, showing fans crowding into the conentin center.) It was not only an idea that didn't excite me, it would actually encompass an awful lot of work.
Then he made a simpler suggestion. I sat down with it for a couple of hours tonight and came up with this. At this point most of the basic work is done. I need to add more detail in the foreground. (Mostly sand ripples, pebbles, and fractured bedrock.) And I have to work in Saara Mar's left hand. Then its just a matter of pencilingin the lines more darkly.
Another plus about this is I can erase the cover of The Link later. Then I can find additional use for this as a fanzine cover.
The scene is Mars once again. This time a couple of hundred yards from the lip of Victoria Crater. Saara just leaves her stuff anywhere!

One of these days I fully expect Taral to accidentally publish something that causes half of the people who see it to go totally Oz Trials on him.
He'd probably get off the hook with 200 hours community service painting street signs.
Taral constantly surprizes with the amount of detail his picture's backgrounds entail.

What are Oz Trials? All I can think of is Australia, which does put me in mind of some bogus kiddy porn charges a few years ago that I was somewhat accessory to. The prosecutor used furry art as evidence of the charges, and the poor sod was actually convicted. "Fortunately," he was given what amounted to a severe slap on the wrist, but it was still a terrible, costly ordeal, and doesn't look at all pretty on his record. I can't imagine what his passport must look like...
When did Australia stop being a cool place?

"Oz" was an Australian/British counterculture magazine in the 1960s that got sued for alleged obscenity. Twice. Which I suppose ain't bad going...

Hard to imagine what qualifies as "obscenity" anymore. Fornicating with the flaming corpse of John Lennon through an orifice recently installed with a post-driller? Thai babies forced to do it with crocodiles before theyre swallowed as apertifs? Smashing a gallery of Hollywood celebrity penises, pickled in antique Chivis Regal bottles, then stomping on the contents?
I wonder if I shouldn't trademark some of those for later exploitation?

I like it... The shiny shoulders combined with the nightshirt/tunic/whateverthatis just seems... absurd enough to fit her perfectly.
I think the magazine positioning is a little awkward, though. Perhaps a little forward and up? I'm not sure, just brainstorming. Would it work better for the piece if the hand on the back cover was 'supporting' the magazine and the front cover was left open with her fingers just holding the edge? Or do you deliberately want to cover the magazine cover because she isn't posing for a camera and doesn't care if she's covering the magazine cover, and that makes it seem more realistic?

The wrap over her silver tunic is more or less like a serape, but is worn only to add a little colour, not for shelter.
The magazine is somewhat low, but I don't want to cover more of her upper body than it does. I'm also aiming to make her left hand work where it is rather than have to reposition the folds of the wrap. Laziness is a much underrated virtue.
