I love the fact that ford made the GT40 many years ago to shut Ferrari up in the 24hr Le Mans race back in the 60's. Detroit can do anything they put thier minds to and be successful at it.
"The Ford GT40 was a high performance sports car and winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans four times in a row, from 1966 to 1969 (in 1967 with a different body, though). It was built to win long-distance sports car races against Ferrari (who won at Le Mans six times in a row from 1960 to 1965). The GT40 GT-40P 1075 was the first car to win at Le Mans twice (in 1968 and 1969). That car used the Gurney Weslake engine with the special alloy heads made by Weslake."

Now I'm not a big Ford fan myself, but growing up in the Detroit area, I have a good understanding of whats currently happening and why. Basically unforeseen economic down turns mixed with a union that demands too much from the big three (UAW) took a huge punch to the auto makers, not to mention the gas prices (for some reason....) that made the buyers skiddish on buying vehicles that didn't get 35+ mpg. All in all, timing sucked for them, they'll all still pull through.

I prefer the Ford Fusion myself, I think it's a great midsize sedan, and it's Detroit's best (and only real) hybrid! Hybrid or not, that's a great car. So is the 2nd-gen Chevrolet Equinox, with better fuel economy than the Ford Escape Hybrid (barely). Camaro is just jaw-dropping awesome. GM also got the Malibu right, but it's not as good as the Fusion. The Ford Focus is a nice little compact (and perfect for the techie). Ford Taurus (6th-gen) is also awesome (and contains even more tech, O_O). Also, Cadillac has significantly improved to a respectable sporty luxury car.
I have followed the Volt hype for a little over a year now, and I can't wait for it to come out. It shall henceforth be a cornerstone of American innovation. 40 miles gas-free, enough to satisfy most people. Then it gets 50 MPG after. I also hope they come out with the Cadillac Converj, it will likely make the car profitable. Chevrolet Cruze is also an interesting compact, and will be an improvement from the Cobalt. The Spark will also be a step up from the piece of junk Aveo, although I am not sure it will be as good as the Focus. Next-gen Ford Fiesta, getting better mileage than the Prius, will also be a fine addition to the American marketplace (60+ MPG is good for me!)
Overall, Detroit has improved significantly. All they need to do is get rid of their junk (Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and copies of the same vehicle, especially trucks, with different tag). They still have issues, and are still not as good as the Japanese, but they are getting there (as some vehicles have already matched their reliability).
However, all Chrysler vehicles suck. Every last one. I wouldn't mind them being gone, but I hope Fiat can help them make at least ONE car that gets over 30 MPG. Oh, well, what can you do?

Look now, my penis is also slightly tuned and it's still not a gas-guzzler. I sez to you verily that if you're into pimping or if you're hunting irradiated mutants in a post-apocalyptic US of A. Like dude! American wheels have too much of that 'hey, let's shape it all exciting like that toycar i saw once in a dream!' going on.
Like windresistance alone goes up so much 'cos it's shaped all wrong and whatnot..propably doesn't even have a slot to fit a Blaupunkt player...Fuck. I AM EUROTRASH!!!
OK..I Love debating and i always choose my side from an opposing opinion. Regardless if i'm right or not.
Also noteworthy fact. My opinions are not even constructive/valid/relevant. I apologize for causing hurt feelings or distress
PS.I have actually really really wanted a 60's/70's mustang but the spareparts would be way too hard to get here in Russian border. So i'll settle into listening to Adam Tensta - Dopeboy Feat.Eboi
D-D-DO I LOOK LIKE I SELL DRUGS? *flicks limp wrist*

That used to be me, that really used to be me, but I have changed my ways. Now people respect me more and treat me better, because I treat them better. Now that I don't mean to come out and hurt people's feelings, they no longer jump and call me "arrogant," "annoying," "destructive," and what not, as you now seem to be.

I know I'm commenting a lot on this picture, but I've read a lot on cars and I really just can't resist. My Dad bought a 320is back in the 1980's. That was a terrible decade for cars in general, but it was especially bad for the domestic brands. Just like the 70's, the 80's brought us vomit, and gave us a taste of terrible reliability and excuses for vehicles that didn't work out. Even Cadillac was bad (and it was very bad). The first CAFE law was partly to blame.
However, the foreign automakers were already dealing with high gas prices and made fuel-efficient vehicles out of necessity. The 80's was BMW at its finest. They were higher quality back then than they are now. The 320is got excellent fuel economy and had great horsepower. It was also very sporty. Back then the European automakers were, for the first time, a great leap ahead. Dad's 320is is still functioning perfectly, and it saved him from the American-made junk at the time. It was also one of the first to have a special thing called fuel injection, woot! This was one thing America wasn't able to catch up on, and it hurt them badly. Now, as you expect it in all vehicles, it has contributed greatly to our society.
Although now, in 2009 (and even more so coming in 2010 and 2011) I do agree that GM is quickly catching up to the quality of the Europeans. The quality of the European automakers is also rapidly declining. The Cadillac vehicles are starting to get ahead of BMW, and in many ways surpass (especially in tech). Fords are better than VW and, in some cases, Mercedes. However, in the 1980's, you had two choices in American quality, 1) Bad and 2) Horrific. I congratulate GM for finally starting to come out of their dark past. I have great optimism for their future, and even more so for Ford. I can say without a doubt that the CTS is an excellent vehicle. It is going to give a lot of foreigners a run for their money, no doubt, and I look forward to even more high-quality/high-tech vehicles in the future (see my other post).

Everything you just said is strickly opinion based. A car is only as good as you take care of it as well. Yes some are engineered better then others. But when you say "american-junk" you have to have tried them all before being able to compare anything really. Also, that caddy is direct injection, which is like regular fuel inject, but a bit better ;)
O.K. I have learned many things from you now. I am humbled and this car-thingy makes sense to me now.
Guess i have gone bitter since i try to choose sensible cars but i don't know nothing but first-hand test-driving *sigh*
Fuck..my economycar Peugeot 406 just got hit by a lightning a week ago and now a crazy hobo with a lada crashed into it. He had a plastic-bag bandage on his driving-hand and bicyclebaskets/chickencoops next to it. (for some sinister purpose i assume)
They fixed the lightning thing innit (it was as if it was possessed by the devil). I got a call and they sez that these new cars can't take lightning at all, they go crazy. The damage from the hobo is not even checked at yet.
So i'm happy that they were able to fix it for a reasonable price, then the hobo who never apologized, had no money nor documents. Fuck...fuck..meltdown..the car was beautiful and shiny and silent when i got it 2 months ago. Now it squeaks, fender is bent etc. What man would want her now?!
So caddy would be the way to go now? I want a reasonably consuming car one day with good tech. REASONABLY priced spare-parts etc.
If you could buy a car for 10.000$ What would you buy?

For $10,000 I would NOT buy a new vehicle! Nothing is well-equipped at that price, and with even a slightly-used car you can get more stuff and a better deal.
I would most likely get a slightly used Ford Focus, Toyota Yaris or Toyota Corolla. I want something that gets good gas mileage, but doesn't break the bank.
On Caddy being the way to go, this only applies to the CTS and CTS-V. They are the great cars. This is what I would get if I was looking solely for luxury. They have finally matched their foreign competitors, creating the perfect blend of power and technology.

Thank you for your sincere advice. Toyota corolla has peaked my interest now since it is rumored to be endurant and reliable. And the gasmileage! I lives in Europe so gas costs so much more than in US (75+% price is tax)
But i DO want a caddy, but can't afford without unreasonable sacrifices. Could look one up in a year or two when businessmen notice it isn't the latest thing anymore

Dude! I checked it out and the 2.0i Comfort costs 28 500€ *facepalm*
But it did like awesomely in testing. And it's not exactly greedy gas-wise. Also on list as a possible purchase when prices have dropped to 30%. Will take a year or two according to experience. Extra kudos on safety points!

The CTS is proof that Detroit can make a good car. Congratulations, Larka just bought an American-made masterpiece! This truly is what Cadillac should be. It is a cornerstone of American luxury. It has taken a once beaten-down and dying brand into a rejuvenated foreign competitor. What was an excuse is now an example. It has shown how much things can change. It is the perfect blend of luxury, tech and performance.
It has won Car & Driver's 10Best award, and is the first-ever Caddy to do so. It has also won Motor Trend's Car of the Year. It is the American Dream on wheels. To quote Wikipedia, "The CTS is credited with rejuvenating the Cadillac brand, and possibly saving it from extinction, in a time during which Cadillac sales were falling as buyers began to favor imported luxury brands such as Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.[1] Previous mid-size cars such as the Catera and Allante were part of Cadillac's efforts during the 1990s to capture a younger demographic; success was finally achieved with the CTS, which was prominently featured in an action film and enjoyed better sales than its predecessors.[2]"
This is a great vehicle, and I hope you will one day drive it (or perhaps even afford to drive one).
