Spontoon Island has a MayDay parade as a Spring festival and blow-out for the workers preparing for the tourist season. The hotels, resorts, restaurants, & seasonal shops have to be prepared by the first week in May, when the cruise ships come in. Cleaning and last minute repairs have to be done. Furniture & furnishings are brought out of storage. Supplies are distributed from the co-op warehouses. New workers from the more distant Spontoon Archipelago islands are arriving at their barracks for orientation and training. So this is a welcoming party in the Spontoon Atoll, and also the Spontoonie 'Labor Day'. More background at http://spontoon.rootoon.com/SPwMayDy.html

I've been really enjoying this series of images and ideas. Now I wonder. Is there a group of craftsmen-designers-Artists-creative people who specialize in making these fantastic props and costumes for the Spring Festival?
By the way, the lines about how the Hotels and Tourist Trades prepare for the arrival of the annual tourist season reminded me of this Filipino fellow I once met in San Diego. He had the amazing skill of making a bed sheet or blanket flap out and lay squarely on the bed. Years of practice of course, and he explained, "It's all in the Wrist."

Yes. And knowing Spontoonies, the designers are probably both a co-op business AND a union. They would also do stage props and costumes for stage productions and street theater. Some of the themed puppets are saved, maintained, & reused - and stored in warehouse space over the (mild) Winter. Meeting rooms & guest rooms in some wings of the seasonal hotels are often used for storage between tourist season.
I would hope that there is plenty of room for folk-art, and amateur costuming. Some of the costumes are very casual, and others have enthusiastic levels of amateur craftsmanship.
