When Stephan reached into the-
...Err, hang on a second, guys.

HELLO, ERAKIR! <3
---
Okay, sorry about that. Anyway...
When Stephen reached into the treasure box, he pulled out a red orb. At first he thought it was made of glass, but upon testing it, he could tell that it was actually quite a bit more durable and likely very solid.
He examined his face in the reflection of the orb, the light glistening off of the jewel in his own forehead.
"THERE you are!" a voice spoke from inside of his mind! "You need to lend your powers to the forces of Gaia, Carbuncle!"
"Huh? What?" Stephan stammered. "No, I think you've got me mixed up with-"
"Now, now. Stop toying around, Carbuncle. I recognize the jewel in your forehead anywhere. Take off that silly disguise!"
"No, wait! IIIIIIIIAAAAAAAUGGGghhhh...!" Stephan began as his body transformed into a powerful energy and was absorbed into the red materia.
She exploded out again and soon found she was floating in the air, feeling quite a bit different than she had mere seconds ago.
"That's better. Now, come, Carbuncle. It's time we helped the team!"
Carbuncle felt herself being absorbed back into the orb. this time, however, she felt the experience as being more... familiar somehow. Something easier to understand and do.
---
Sometime later...
---
"He's gonna attack with Firaga again! Quick! Use the summon!"
"CARBUNCLE! PROTECT US!"
Carbuncle felt her spirit called upon and she burst forth into the dark realm. Standing between the warriors who had summoned her and a powerful demon of Chaos, she knew that he had to be stopped for balance to return to Gaia.
Floating into the air, Carbuncle used the power of her new and improved jewel to protect the warriors with her Ruby Light spell. Then she vanished back into the materia, ready to be summoned by the forces of good again when the time had come.
---
The gemstone Stephen pulled out in this picture was ORIGINALLY going to be magicite since Carbuncle isn't in Final Fantasy VII, but then I remembered what magicite WAS and... well, yeah. That seemed a bit too dark for my liking. XD
I could also have used a ruby (i.e. Final Fantasy IX), but that seemed too generic and... look, just stop going on about it, okay? XD
