A photo of a cooperative little kitten that was sitting on my back stair along with two of its siblings and mother, all likely waiting for the food I usually dish up after getting home. I'm now feeding three generations of cats, though the number has kind of fallen off lately. I can only hope that those that don't come back have gone on to find caring homes or new territories where they're still being fed. At least I get to see some of the new additions. I may even get to the point where they'll allow me to pet them like I do their mother now.

One of the first kittens I fed was this same color. He's also one of the first I was ever able to pick up. I really wanted to be able to clean up his face because the poor thing was suffering from allergies or something like that. These days that kitten is a good sized tom that tolerates me picking him up once in a while but still purrs each time I do and loves to get petted when I'm outside. I'm hoping to help feed this little one so they'll grow up just as healthy.
Most of the cats I feed now I have known since they were kittens so they know I won't hurt them. Maybe this puts the other cats at ease a bit and they will hang around too unless I'm wearing or carrying something unfamiliar to them or other people are around. I'm glad to see they're not completely used to people, including me, at times. I'm just hoping people will let them live peacefully and I can continue feeding them for as long as I'm able to.
I've got a couple that will walk up to my back door when I open it in the mornings to give them their breakfast. Of course, when I step outside, they back off several feet. But, when I go to leave our utility room, they practically run over me to get to the food. I doubt they'd let me get close enough to pet one of them but, at least they don't run away. LOL.
Of the cats I feed, four to six crowd right up to the back door so I have to be careful opening the screen door and closing it so no one's tail or paw is trapped. This same group usually clusters around my legs so I have to step carefully even going down the stairs to the plastic containers I leave out to feed them in. Sometimes they'll run away if I make a sudden noise or drop one of the containers with the food and cuss myself for doing it. They come back quickly though.
Many of the cats I'm feeding started rubbing against my legs. I've cautiously touched several and now I have a small group who like receiving some petting even when I don't have food for them. I still have to be cautious doing it, so I don't startle them but many seem to like the contact.
I've had two cats in my lifetime and both were rescued from the outdoors as kittens - one of those was still young enough I had to bottle feed him. That one ended up liking my dad, who professed to hate cats, until this one. The other, rescued by my brother, took to liking me. With an exception of about 3 years, she was my best little furry friend for 20 years. I've inherited a small dog from my grandmother passing away so I still have a fuzzy companion - who is cat friendly being raised with my kitty.
If I felt the need, I might be able to adopt one of these cats. They're certainly curious enough about the house but I just leave them to do their thing, be together outside and feed and give them water so they hopefully don't starve or die of thirst.
