I once applied to an art company, they designed greeting cards and stuff like that. They did liked my work, but I needed to be able to work with QuarkXpress and er... some other program. But if I had taught myself that, I would have had the job.
If you have enough talent and skill, the art world is one of the few places they will overlook lack of paperwork. Let's face it, noone is going to die a horrible death if you don't know some technical term for a certain perspective or color. It ain't brain surgery.
