I think I'm making progress with this fur brush thing, this one was done with the opacity mostly at 100%
Still not fully satisfied - I need the fur to follow the body contours exactly and for there to be no visible roots (I keep forgetting that the furthest-away hairs must applied first).
Background is funny shade of grey because I put a semi-transparent black layer over the top to do the shading. And thanks to the Fuzzyball it has better shading than it did when it started - he's good at shading.

It's getting better, the contour is sharper, even if still need some work. i'm sorry that I can't help you with this, not knowing the technique :(
One thing I used to do was shading with a brush of the same colour of the background from the outside to the inside of the figure. It help to define the contour better...
