These are the two leather clad hip-plates before I punched holes in them.

That's 14 gauge steel plate with thin red-leather covered them. It gives the plates a lovely feel and allows things like aging and other aspects. The leather itself is attached with spray adhesive. Back of the plate has padding attached.
