Depending on how far it is from other land, they might not have the ability to fly quite that far, and unless they know exactly which direction to go, it would be death by drowning.

They are part bird, so they should have birds' sense of direction.
If not then evolution must really have hated them.

Even if they had such a thing there is still a good chance of them being too far from anything to fly there.

Basically this. They were swept out to sea in a vessel not made for it during a storm, with no indication of the mainland and got stranded on an island in this RP...though it didnt actually end in vore there. :P
