Definitely, can you tell me how they work?

Every person born in Maldora is able to use magic. However, without the use of a spellstone (Which is what they inserted into the slots) their magical energy amounts to nothing. With the stone, they are able to concentrate their spells and shape them. Over time, the spellstones slowly become smaller, as every spell spends a tiny fraction of the stone in order to work. Spellcanons were created in a collaboration between the dragons and the Maldorans, and they work by greatly amplifying all the energy stored and focused through the spellstones, and are aimed and directed by the dragon itself, having far more magical energy than a Maldoran. Later on, I reveal that dragonless spellcanons exist, but quickly tire the operators (Since it would take more than one to use)

they stood their ground instead of leaving then they used their wits to figure out that they should not blimdly attack the dragons or skyriders that appeared so suddenly

Well yeah. But remember, the Maldorans simply couldn't leave as they were driven to exhaustion.
