For Laura, it is very common to experiment with dimensional portals and teleporters, having to deal with very small civilisations to learn their secrets. This time, when she attempted to pull a miniature city from another dimension, the experiment failed. Or at least that's how it appeared. In reality she'd pulled the city through, but it was placed somewhere similar to where it had been in its old world. So it found the closest thing to a 'river' and set up there...
