Once upon a time, I had a character named Kava. She was the daughter of Taka (Scar) and Sarabi, conceived at the very beginning of Taka's reign. I'd always loved Scar, despite his 'evilness' and tried to come up with reasons why he had gone bad (his father giving him the scar, abusive childhood, obvious child favoritism). Anyway, I figured Kava would grow up thinking her father was a hero and then be devastated when her long-lost half-brother killed him. Not a very good way to introduce yourself, huh?
Kava slipped out of the den without being noticed. Not even the ever-watchful Zazu had seen her leave. He was much too preoccupied with his release to keep an eye on his captor's cubs and chosen heir. A little voice in the back of her head told the young princess to return to the safety of the cave and wait for her father to return, but curiosity drove her forward. Even through the swirling walls of fire, she could make out the forms of two adult male lions. She pushed on, though the hot air stung her lungs, she knew she'd be safe when she reached the king. Her eyes watered, blurring the forms as they fought with the same fury of the fire around them. Finally, the wall of flames opened up and the cub was able to catch a cooler waft of air. Her eyes adjusted, and what she saw next would chill the cub to the bone. The hyenas had gathered around her father. Perhaps on any other occasion, this would be a normal occurrence, but the look in their eyes was one of vengeance... and hunger...
