As an unwilling servant to the Sith, Locke was trained to fight in armor. While the use of armor among the Sith and Jedi was usually limited to eras of war between the two factions, the Kanj'isha Sith knight found himself most comfortable in the thick of things when wearing at least two or three pieces of protective gear.

Time changes circumstances, but not always preferences. When the wolf followed his friend and clone-brother in joining the Jedi order, he may have traded in his old traditional lightsaber to construct a dual-phase pike lightsaber; but he still preferred the comfortable weights of a chest-piece and pair of greaves on his body, protection he could reinforce through the Force. Having recently attained knighthood and received his choice in robes, he borrowed a few key pieces of armor to complete the look- when others see him, they will recognize him as a Jedi Guardian.
