This piece is a recreation of a photograph with the client's character as the stand in, some details changed in an attempt to make it more accurate to the late 1800's. The $20 bills on the table should be period accurate, and to my knowledge so are the cards and poker chips. Not that I was going for straight up historical accuracy, there's plenty of leeway to for matching the original photo, and for making it a fun to look at piece. Feels great to get my teeth into a more detailed piece after doing so many small commissions, and this one was truly a pleasure to make!

As a gun person, I would like to share this in regards to works containing guns. You can usually break 1 rule, but at 2 someone might get injured. Obviously draw whatever looks cool > realism, but this might be useful to keep in mind for more modern scenes.
4 Basic Rules of Firearm Safety
-Assume all guns are always loaded.
-Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy or kill.
-Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
-Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
EDIT: And yes, I do know this is a recreation of a photo, it just came to mind. Art is fantastic BTW.

He looks like my 19th century ancestor, El Ladron Coyote. He was known for being a bandit throughout his life. He was mainly a money thief and gold thief. He gave my great great great great grandpa some great advice that has been passed down generation to generation: "Don't steal something YOU want, steal something your heart desires"
