I can't be sure. However I do know that if she was a tanuki, they'd make her a 'raccoon' for us IGNORANT WESTERN ROUND-EYE BARBARIANS.

Nintendo already did that to Tom Nook, which is a crime to all tanuki.
There are a few times they got it right tho, like in Konami's Goemon series they used their English name, "raccoon dog."

And isn't Tanuki just a Japanese breed of raccoon? (Procyonis Nicturydes, or something in that genus.)

If I recall right, the early Japanese tended to just clump all raccoons and badgers into the same family.

Fantastic! I love the notes -I'd always though that she bears too much of a resemblance to a Tanuki to not be one. You're also probably right your theory about her being a Tanuki and changed into a raccoon for 'round eye joe'.

Hey! On that subject -what about Super mario brothers? That's a perfect example. We'd always called it a Tanuki suit, but it would have been a completely different game with the balls. Maybe instead of flying he Mario could have just bounced on them like a giant bouncing ball.

I'm told the debate rages on as far as Marine/Ringsy's species. The two top contenders are tanuki and red panda. Judging from her coloration and markings, I support red panda. Google one yourself, and see what you think. Hug a wah today!

Hmm. If she were a red panda, I'd expect her to have three tail colors, the visible 'tear' marks on her face, white ears, and most of her body being black.
