When I talk about Tanuki, they always ask what the english translation is for it.

I tell them the closest thing is "Raccoon Dog," but really it's just a Tanuki, Japanese animals have Japanese names.

Oh I know, But they were introduced into Russia/Europe for furring. So technically they are an invasive species over there.

Also, the Lychee fruit isn't grown in Japan, yet the western world knows it by it's Japanese name. ;)
