Oh dear. This is the kind of hot water a simple act of kindness can get you into. But if I were Captain Weathers, I might be inclined to be a little more cautious in how I approached a group of strangers I knew nothing about. However desperate the situation might be, going in with guns blazing, so to speak, should probably be the last option instead of the first. Then again, I guess it's the outsider who sees most of the game, and if I were in his position I can't really say I'd do any different.
Lt. Gerard is a character from the 1960s TV series turned 1993 movie (and 2000 remake series) The Fugitive. He relentlessly pursued the title character, who was a fugitive--just as Marcus pursues Diana.
