They're Sisters of Battle. Basically, they serve the Adeptus Ministorum, the Imperial Chruch, which by ancient decree is not permitted to have MEN under arms, so they get around this by having WOMEN under arms. Also, while they are tecnically nuns, they are not actually required to take vows of chastity.
Thats the Sisters of Silence, most Sisters of Battle are still just human, but a few display such absolute faith and fervour that they can manifest actual miracles. Also they aren't the only female characters in 40K. There are plenty of female Eldar characters and troops, who may be good for additional pronz, if one if looking for something classier/bitchier/kinkier
