It was pretty messed up when I got it, but I spent the day cleaning it up as best I could. I have no idea what brand this thing is. I still need to paint the body of the motor, and I want to do it right so I'm gonna wait till I can afford proper supplies, which will be in a couple of weeks.

Woo hoo! you made a haul! I've been trying to get my mitts on one of those. I ended up getting a cheap jc whitney job. Yours could be a federal signal. Its been so long since I hit the auctions that I'm not sure. Also, make sure it isn't a six volt unit B4 connecting to a 12 v battery.
I've no way of knowing /how/ to check if it's 6 volt. I dug around on ebay a little bit and saw others like this; same motor different siren that said it's 12 volt. The motor spun up on a little 12v battery I have, but I didn't actually try it until after I took the chopper off. I got some of the buildup off from the inside out outside of the outer core with some steel wool, and the rotor too. Sadly I don't think I'll be able to really clean the inside of the front half, as the guts are riveted in place, and I don't have a rivet gun or rivets. Pop rivets would be the wrong kind anyways.
