The magnifying glass (and it's extra arms) are fitted with three different kinds of lens - Aetheryte, Jade and Sapphire - each of which 'filters' the appearance of magic differently to one trained in the magical arts. Of course to you and me, stuff in the glass just looks like it's got a funky colour-filter over it.
The wand is the magical equivalent of a heart monitor - it detects the presence of natural life in the targetted subject and glows if it's there. If it wasn't, or if it was there in the same way that an undead servant's "life" was, it either wouldn't glow, or would glow differently, depending.
