The Black Drain is noted for its spectacular fog production in winter.

They're cleaning it up now after fifty years of dumping straight into the river, that’s why it’s called the Black Drain. It doesn't smell of the paper processing chemicals anymore but the water is still black from the tannin in the trees they process.

The worst I could think of was the Ohinimuri River waste from the stamper batteries including heavy metals and cyanide were dumped straight into the river. That happened a lot in the Coromandel. Its been cleaned up now.

That's really nasty. In Westbrook, it was the S.D. Warren papermill.

Smelled like cabbage.

Tasman Pulp and Paper manages to do cabbage and rotten eggs, from the sulfurous geothermal steam used at the plant.
