A moving story! It's canon as far as I'm concerned.
Space games feel lonely to me because any given location has no larger significance. Either you can't land anywhere and planets are purely decorative, or every planet is pretty much the same. In a shared environment, with an active GM instead of mindless procedural generation, it'd be possible to override the randomness and do something more memorable like this world.
