Been meaning to do this for a while now.
I've gotten a lot of art of Shi'ran over the years, but he's not the only character that I've designed or built up -- I have a lot of other characters and personalities tied to Shi'ran and his world/continuity that I've been longing to have drawn but haven't been able to. Characters such as Rina, Fayte, Rosko, etc, don't count because they aren't from Shi'ran's world; they aren't part of his 'canon', so to say.
With many thanks to the amazing
Taala I've been able to have one of these longstanding characters brought to life in art.
This is Y'hiel Z'yon, Shi'ran's older and somewhat estranged brother. Pronounced Yai-eel Zay-on, he stands just over eight feet tall, and makes Shi'ran -- who is tall in comparison to humans and other hominid beings -- look, well, short. xD. In fairness, canonically Shi'ran is short for his race, whereas Y'hiel is a little above-average.
Appearance
In terms of appearance, Y'hiel looks quite a lot different from Shi'ran; even though they're both technically Windragons, whilst Shi'ran near-identically looks like one and is fuzzy in hide, Y'hiel looks more akin to a more standardised western dragon with large, overlapping scales that are most predominantly noticeable on his back and tail. At a glance the only similarities between them are their frame and their feathered wings. His grey-green colouration and yellow eyes hark from his original role as a side-character, who I originally described as an Orc but later evolved into what he is as of now. I decided it was better to not change them, even though I could've.
His clothing style and preferences are a mix of utilitarian and punk, not too dissimilar to Shi'ran but visibly far less restrained and more geared towards personal preference and show rather than raw utility above all else. He predominantly wears a bomber jacket or a Parka, his jacket and pants usually cluttered with pieces of metal or chains or other similar trinkets. The colours vary on season and location, ranging from a muted dark/black theme (shown here), to a colder, arctic colour for winter, and more. His hair is long and similar in design to dreadlocks. His weapon of choice is a studded combat staff, which ensures that anybody who gets too close for comfort is swiftly and firmly beaten down.
Personality
In terms of personality, Y'hiel is described as a much more easygoing and outspoken individual; easy to get along with, friendly and welcoming despite his large frame and somewhat intimidating appearance -- yet he still possesses a deadly cold much the same as Shi'ran does, meaning he is never to be taken lightly or underestimated. He enjoys socialising for the sake of socialising, and is good at articulating harmless pranks. He rarely acts in a way that suggests superiority over others, instead preferring to act 'alongside' others rather than stand above them, and therefore comes across as relatable and down-to-earth. He enjoys billiards and dungeon-delving as social activities, as well as train-jumping and climbing anything that's tall and obvious.
He isn't blindly happy-go-lucky and does at points demonstrate cynicism; deep down he harbours resentment towards the events of the civil war, but knows that acting out on his frustration will never change the past. He doesn't go out of his way to cause animosity, trouble or to attack people 'just because', and will usually go out of his way to aid strangers in trouble, but when it comes down to his work he is similarly somewhat morally-grey, like Shi'ran, with little ability to express guilt or remorse for the consequences of his work.
Canonically, he serves as Shi'ran's 'ground' to reality, having been the one to have helped tone down and hold back Shi'ran's adolescent, sociopathic tendencies by giving him someone relatable, trustworthy but distant-enough for him to lean on for moral or mental support, but to not become wholly reliant on.
Y'hiel predominantly speaks with a quick, strong southern-continent accent, comparable to the Scottish dialect, due to having grown up in a completely different place due to the civil war that both of them lived through. Unlike Shi'ran, who demonstrates a very clear limitation in his accent and fluidity of speaking English -- sounding somewhat Scandinavian as a result -- Y'hiel speaks completely naturally and fluent, as if English is his mother tongue.
Skills
For abilities, Y'hiel is much more basic and grounded; he can breathe fire, fly, and has natural resistances to fire, heat and fire and wind-elemental magic. He also possesses Shi'ran's ability to shape his energy into a raw form, similar to explosive forces or blasts, but he's ill-practiced -- he otherwise has no noteworthy magical abilities. Physically, Y'hiel is much, much stockier and stronger than Shi'ran is, but the consequence is being far less agile and reliant more on strategy and brute force instead of skillful, artistic agility and the MacGuyvering ability that Shi'ran relies on for combat.
Y'hiel's shining skill is his superior strategic ability and tactical know-how, previously operating as his mercenary guild's tactician for planning and carrying out jobs before the guild was disbanded. He is also a master linguist, fluent in several languages amongst his homeworld as well as multitudes of regional accents and dialects amongst them; rumour has it that his strong, Scottish accent isn't his native accent, even though it appears to be.
Y'hiel has been someone I've been wanting to 'bring to life' for a long time, so I'm really happy with how this came out and how he looks. I'm hoping to get much more art of him in the future, as well as to introduce more of Shi'ran's canon; hopefully the next one will be Klien, who is Shi'ran's 'rival' (so-to-say) and who is just as important as Y'hiel is. :3
