I know I said I wouldn't upload anything to FA until I finished Blue's picture buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut....
I did a rough sketch of this several days ago and today I came upon this article on MSN: http://www.theroot.com/views/enough.....sses?gt1=38002
And it pissed me off. Somuch so that I had to color this picture just to be able to link it with that article.
If people were really expected to have attainable goals as children, they would be very very sad people indeed. They'd grow up being forced to do without a childhood, being reprimanded for using their imaginations. How would they turn out as adults?
.... well probably a great many of them are among the furries and babyfurs right now. The world is FULL of people trying to reclaim their lost childhoods and this woman is blaming Disney for making a princess's life appealing? None of the Disney princesses had a life they didn't have to work for to get their happiness. Cinderella was mentally and verbally abused by her family, Belle took her father's place in what was basically prison and agreed to never see him again to save his life, and Mulan went to fucking war in disguise to save her family's farm and her father's life. They didn't work for their status? Bullshit.
Even Ariel had to (kinda) work at getting her life how she wanted it. And in the original story, pre-disney, she DIES. She doesn't GET her happy ending originally. And yes, modern era ideals on feminism and equality do not reflect the mentality of medieval times, but that's what makes it incredible that these women did stand up for themselves and fight for a better life than to just be married off and do as they were told (with the exception of Snow White who I kinda loathe). Sure they didn't actively go to work to make money at a job they hated like so many people do today but THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO. Money was not such a big thing in that time as it is now. There was always an alternative way to get what you needed. If you needed food, go out in the woods and kill something, make a garden and plant some crops, trade your neighbor a bucket of milk for a bucket of apples. Money was not the be-all-end-all it has come to be in this era.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to live a fantasy - everyone in the world has a fantasy about what they want to be. Hannah Montana is this generation's Cinderella as sad as that is to consider. In the distinct lack of royalty, people look up to Movie stars and models as their fantasy lifestyles. Nothing's different. Whether it's a Disney princess or some skinny-ass floozy strutting half-naked down the runway in Prague, there's no avoiding that people are drawn to having a fantasy.
tl;dr: Bitch needs to shut the fuck up. Her kids are 2 and 4 years old. >=/ OF COURSE SHE WANTS THE SHINY JEWELRY. IT'S SHINY GODDAMNIT.

(Gah I missed your art so much, Bash!)
I agree with you. Most people do not know that the story of Mulan was based on an ACTUAL historical happened in China. Albiet, Disney had it's touch on it, Mulan was a real woman who went through all of that to honor her family and eventually her country. When I saw Mulan in theaters, I admired her. I never saw her as a princess, but I saw her as a strong woman who stuck to her beliefs and proved that women could do anything men could do and perhaps even better. I think that is a good rolemodel for girls to have.

Feminism has a point where it becomes annoying, and this woman has reached it. She wants two kids who can't even read or write to have attainable goals like being a lawyer, doctor, or entrepreneur? Those kids know what a doctor is - it's the man in the white coat that pokes them with needles - but they have no idea what an entrepreneur is. Most adults barely know what it is and then couldn't spell it if they had to.
(*noms* Thankies Trist, I missed you too <3 )

Oh I agree totally. Femininsim is good, but when it gets to be too extreme, that's where I draw the line. Most kids want to be simple things like a ballet dancer or a teacher or a vet (hell, I wanted to be a cat). Like you said, they don't know what a lawyer is or an entrepreneur and I sure as heck didn't want to be that guy in the white coat who stuck me with needles when I was little. I wish she'd let these children have some time to be kids because when you become an adult, you wish you were young again.
You wanted to be a cat? That's so cute. Mission accomplished, I think X3
I wanted to be a ballet dancer for yeeeeeeeeeeeeeears and I beeeeeeeeeegged for a tutu every christmas that I never got and I asked for dance lessons which I never got and well now I'm too tall and chunky to even think about being a dancer. Oh well, some goals you reach, some you don't.

"Her kids are 2 and 4 years old. >=/ OF COURSE SHE WANTS THE SHINY JEWELRY. IT'S SHINY GODDAMNIT. "
Yeah, seriously.
There was an episode of Darla where she was babysitting two kids who'd never gotten fairy tales as a bedtime story and instead rattle off facts like "While we're being read a story, 10,000 acres of rainforset is being burned to the ground," and Darla deadpans, "Yeah, because a 5 year old really need to know THAT."

I know, right? I stalked around the house for like an hour ranting about it until Drifter was like "Okay... okay... let's focus on something else, hm?"
And I'm sure someone (namely whoever got her featured on the front page of MSN) is praising her ridiculous little tirade as "sticking it to the man" or some shit about how Disney is just another evil corporation trying to make us sell our souls to them for their crappy merchandise.
And she's Sooooo worried that a black princess will make her kids want to be princesses even more. Oh. My. God. It's like she's racist against herself. "Oh noes a character they can connect with on a more personal level THIS CANNOT BE ALLOWED!"
