The original idea I had was this. Unlike the imaginary Martian scene I had done for the Worldcon, this is more or less the view at Victoria Crater, the year-long haunt of Mars Rover "Opportunity." (Later, I kicked it up a notche by adding some very distant mesas on the horizon.) The problem with this was that I knew from very tiresome experience just how long it took to clean up the pencils and colour a elaborately detailed background like this. Fortunately, the guy at The Link suggested a good idea. Swipe a background from the Worldcon progress report piece that I had already done.
