just a collection of thoughts regarding what I think they should have done with a Bubsy relaunch/overhaul
- I'm dead serious about the waifu thing. Overwatch caught on like wildfire specifically because of Tracer, Mei, Zarya, and the rest. Nintendo's also made a lot of big waves that way.
- I mentioned this elsewhere, but Bubsy (as is) suffers from "unwarranted sass" which makes him come across as a "thinks he's funny but he's not asshole". The personality shift, here, is to make him a lot more of an optimist ... that can turn on the smarmy sass when provoked. Basically it's the same rule that Bugs Bunny abides by regarding retaliation.
- The animation is an injoke against the original It suffered from sloppy controls, too much speed for the sight distance, and resulted in far too many surprise deaths. The new game "fixed" that by slowing everything down (so now it's slow AND stale). The idea is to polish the controls, keep the speed, but build the game around a sort of frantic feel and have the animations make Bubsy feel in less control than the gamer is.
- Woolies are horribly designed uninteresting villains. They're out.
- The story idea spawned from needing a replacement villain. Aliens were a crutch back then, and they're still a crutch today (alongside zombies). So ... I went with a direct foil to an klutzy out-of-control plucky optimist that wants to do his own thing = big government bureaucrats (slow, witless, sedentary, manipulators of emotion). Also, this whole notion of a guy who takes down something THIS BIG without getting enrolled by a resistance, and just by telling others that they can choose what they want to do in life, is a really appealing notion that I think speaks to a lot of people (I mean, if you've ever quit a job without a backup plan you know exactly what i'm talking about).
- it might seem heady to have an Orwell Dystopia story line that criticizes socialism/comunism and rage baiting "privilege" lectures ... but that's what you do. Toy Story is really about existential and mid life crisis. Charlotte's Web is about DEATH. You take a simple and solid issue as the framework, then immediately disregard it and let the individual characters' stories carry the theme for you. The advantage of this route is that you have a philosophy that you can anchor your characters to and help guide your design decisions ... which leads to ...
- With Bubsy's animations communicating that he's a klutz, but he keeps on trying (well, the player keeps trying because they want to beat the game) - the whole notion (tying back to the heady discussion) is to "tell off the man" and do what you want to in life. This rampant optimism and emphasis on free will also gets carried over to the boss battles, where most of those end up with Bubsy "freeing them" by breaking from their expected/assigned jobs and chasing their dreams (off hand example is telling the bull body guard bruiser to open his china shop that he was gonna wait until retirement for).
- And yeah, you put in the waifus and charm, people won't realize i'm telling them to question the government and turn libertarian. lol

- I actually didn't know about this character. by the time Bubsy 2 came out I'd already lost interest in the franchise. And finding any plot info online is actually pretty hard (compounded by the fact that their story presentation in-game was just about entirely absent ... which is bad for youtubers and lets' plays)
- as further evidence, I can't even pull an image search of the guy. he's basically non-existent
- Given the prior point, there isn't a distinct nostalgia advantage to bringing him back
- ... of course, I'm saying this with a grain of salt. Bubsy himself is surrounded by nothing but infamy.
- ON THE PLUS SIDE, it could recycle and tie-in more of the prior game aspects. ... granted, this take (as above) is trying to steer away from flat-out fantasy in order retain focus on Bubsy as a relatable character (that heavy emphasis since there's a lot of hatred of the character HIMSELF even without the poorly made game due to his "comical one-liners" that "never get old" ). So it'd be more of a satire of a personality trait than anything.
... So yeah. if you could find a pic of the guy that'd be cool. I'm actually curious.
It'd be a total evisceration/reskin like what happened to Bubs, but could actually work.

This would be infinitely better than the cynical schlock that was haphazardly hobbled together and shat out last year.
I got that game for free and I still feel ripped off. That game just made me angrier the further I went into it. What if Sega just made a Sonic game where there's only two types of enemies, Sonic moves slow as shit without even having a Mario-style run mechanic, the levels are just random assets thrown around, and they tell you "Hey, uh sorry the game's only an hour long! Go collect every single ring because dahhhhh Robotnik is trying to hide them! Oh yeah, and you have to defeat him too because... idk lmao BUY MORE SONIC MERCH!!! Here's a cutscene we made out of card board."
Anywho, sorry for ranting on about that! But yeah this idea you have is honestly really cool and I would have much rather seen this play out instead of what we got. Hey, if you ever decide to keep going with this idea, you could always do what I did and just change all the names and branding while mocking the source material. lmao

thanks a ton. ^^
yeah, from what I saw in the trailers, your review doesn't surprise me one bit. Sorry to hear you suffered through it. lol
and yeah, thanks again. I'll keep it in the backburner (since platformers of a big scale take a lot of resources to make), but would be a fun retro-project to work on for sure.

let me put it this way (little more concise)
Bubsy is a side-scrolling video game where you navigate a level and get some adrenaline kicks off dexterity feat completion.
I clarified within the onesheet how that relentless optimism compliments the gameplay feel
unless you overhaul the mechanics, what you're suggesting is going to result in a gnarly ludo-narrative dissonance that's basically a tumblr emo fanfic that transitions into headbopping platformer action ... wherein nobody will take you seriously.

it's not so much a RIDICULOUS IDEA that's too cool to be understood ... It's that you completely missed my point. "Not even in the same ball park" levels of missed the point.
so again: the point = GAMEPLAY
me: what does that have to do with gameplay?
you: oh, I guess I just wanted sadness. :C Because I relate to sadness. Let me bitch about 1st world problems because everyone relates to that ... that's funny, right?
All you did was make it clear you're content with fanfic authoring instead of video game design. So ... yeah, I'm done here.
