As our world decays, and our civilization stretches to the very ends of this world, more desperate measures must be taken.

Some were criminals, both petty and dangerous, some were grown in vats and pods by the hands of man, and some were simply those seeking a higher purpose in life.

Little remains of themselves, their brains enhanced or replaced with complex wires and electronics. Their eyes replaced with a series of complex sensor boards, and their other senses nullified or replaced with mechanical systems. Only the stem of the brain remains untouched, running vital functions such as breathing and managing basic functions. Their body parts are replaced as needed, and even upgraded as necessary. And when they are in excess, they stand dormant, awaiting further use, often decades apart, if they are not scrapped or destroyed in times of uncertainty. Eating, drinking, and sleeping are unneeded, as several ports for nutrient injections are placed throughout the body.

Their uses vary, normally completing tasks too dangerous or fatal for normal workers or citizens. Providing protection from outside threats, and gathering resources from unsurvivable lands afar.

Truly these living, breathing, hollow shells are of great use to the remnants of our society, and for centuries to come their sacrifice will ensure our future existence.
