I'm sure as children we all knew of the works of the Grimm Brothers.

Well, one of my favorites was Hansel & Gretal/Gretel.
This is not meant to be painted as a masterpiece.
The shaky lines, scratchy look and monotone of the forest and the visual story on the lantern make it all that creepier.
(to me, atleast. >:)
The image is reversed, the trees on a white background show just how very dark the woods are.

Tidbit from my childhood psyche:
I never thought of the witch's house as being really gingerbread and candy. Being lost in the woods, at night, with only fear motivating you to continue though the woods or be lost forever made me think that coming upon any house may be a haven, a shelter.
Plus, starving, dehydrating children are apt to hallucinate.
