I can see why a certain friend of mine loves breaking her characters emotionally. It was very therapeutic!

In-universe, it is because the world is mainly populated by taurs and he is not even though his entire family is. He is a genetic oddity and it takes him a long time to come to terms with it.

Very cute, even with the sadness!

And yeah, a lot of artists love making their characters sad, I don't know why it's so appealing, maybe some sort of emotional transference.
