I should mention that I got the idea for this image and the other from Alex Ross's first 3 covers from Kingdom Come. I guess he was inspired by someone else's group shot for those but I can't remember who the original artist was though I suspect it might have been Normal Rockwell, whom Ross is always doing homages to in his work.
Now that you mention it, that's where I did see the original painting. I look at so many things in so many publications that I tend to forget where I saw something. I'll take a look a bit later on before I head for bed. It's been a while since I looked through that book anyway.
Designing this and the other bunch of characters was a lot of fun. I was trying to emulate a number of known superhero characters yet be a bit different and mix different species too. Back in those days, what little I know of the furry movement seemed to focus on foxes and horses mostly and while I did use a number of those, I tried to make sure I used a few others, especially avians.
